This Porsche 550 Spyder replica was ordered new by the last owner in 2015 from Vintage Motorcars as a turn-key kit and has since been driven just over 500 kilometres (~300 miles). Utilizing a fiberglass body over a tubular steel frame, this example is powered by a 1914cc VW flat-four with dual 44mm carburettors and a Rancho-built 4-speed manual transaxle. Other equipment includes 4-wheel disc brakes, Bilstein adjustable coil overs, diamond-stitched leather seats, and more. An oil service will be completed before delivery to the new owner, and the sale includes build receipts and a car cover. This 550 replica was originally titled in 2015 under California SB-100 as a 1955 Spyder, and it is now being offered in the UK at Design911
The hand-finished fiberglass body is painted in silver, with Mobil Pegasus decals and wide-5 wheels. Other details include a faired fender mirror, leather engine cover straps, and a full windscreen. The car was ordered as a turn-key kit produced, built, and originally titled in California by Vintage Motorcars in Stanton. The chassis number assigned by the California DMV can be seen in the gallery.
Brake cooling ducts up front are functional, and disc brakes are equipped all around. Curb weight is said to be around 1,400 pounds without a driver, and adjustable Bilstein coil overs are mounted out back. A cockpit tonneau is with the car.
The cockpit is trimmed in London Tan and features Speedster-style seats, period-correct square-weave carpets, and a PSA shifter and linkage.
A banjo steering wheel with the Porsche crest and replica VDO gauges are equipped, including a clock in front of the passenger. The speedometer reads in km/h, and just 500 kilometres have been added by the last owner since the completion of the build in late 2015.
Diamond-stitched leather upholstery is pictured above, with tubular chassis members running the length of the driver’s compartment. Latch and link lap belts are equipped for both occupants.
Power comes from a 1914cc Volkswagen flat-four outfitted with dual-choke Empi 44mm carburettors, a 911-style fan, and a 4-speed manual transaxle with 3.88:1 final gear rebuilt by Rancho Transaxles of Fullerton, California. The seller reports that the engine produces around 140 hp and will receive an oil service before delivery to the next owner.
The fuel tank is mounted in the front trunk, and the aluminium racing-style filler protrudes through the hood. An aluminium undertray improves aerodynamics, and the exhaust features twin Magnaflow mufflers.
