Some cars prove that mileage really tells only part of the story. Because what happens when a Porsche spends its entire life with owners who understand exactly what proper maintenance costs and never cut corners on it?

This 1986 Porsche 944 beautifully demonstrates what meticulous maintenance can achieve. Over the years, the car has been serviced by dealers and specialists, while the original books and an extensive collection of invoices have been carefully preserved. Its condition is more reminiscent of a Porsche that has led a considerably quieter life.

But why a 944 in the first place? We can be fairly concise about that: weight distribution and engineering. In the 944, the engine is mounted at the front while the transmission is positioned at the rear in a transaxle layout. This allowed Porsche to achieve an almost perfect 50:50 weight distribution. The result is a car with beautifully neutral handling that, on a winding road, demonstrates exactly why the 944 remains so highly regarded by knowledgeable enthusiasts. And then, of course, there is the engine.

Where the earlier 924 was often criticized for its Audi roots, the 944 received something Porsche enthusiasts had explicitly been asking for at the time: a genuine Porsche engine. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder was developed entirely by Porsche and equipped with balance shafts to make it exceptionally smooth-running.

This example dates from 1986 and therefore also benefits from the important updates Porsche introduced midway through 1985. A more modern dashboard, improved suspension, and various technical refinements made the later 944 noticeably more mature.

The color combination is exactly the way we like to see it: Alpinweiss with a black leather-and-cloth interior. Wonderfully 1980s, yet at the same time remarkably timeless. The body presents in very well-cared-for condition, and inside it is immediately apparent just how carefully this Porsche has been treated over the years. And perhaps that is the entire story of this 944.

Because, of course, you can admire it for its Alpinweiss paintwork, its documentation, and its beautiful condition. But ultimately, this is exactly the kind of Porsche you want to take out onto a great road. Engine up front. Transaxle at the rear. Near-perfect balance. And then discover why the 944 has long since ceased to be simply “the other Porsche.”
